The Romantic Conditon
(2001)
Great River Arts Institute Walpole New Hampshire:
a series of formal photographic projections; a sculptural work including four dozen melting ice hearts; and sound work sited to the location
.

Great River Arts Institute

The piece was installed in a two story building, part of an historic barn complex along the Connecticut River. Upstairs projections of fictional hearts, hearts with odd valves, bunions and growths, floated across the brick walls; downstairs dozens of hearts melted. A multi part audio piece filled the space, connecting the two installations.

The images were first developed as sculptural models, transfered to the computer and then digitally altered to show the anatomically incorrect bunions and outgrowths in the development of each individual heart.

The ice hearts were frozen and unmoulded daily and kept in storage in preparation for the installation.

The audio composition included hollow tones vibrating above and below a frozen surface, percussive notes of the early spring ice break up, narrative elements, a short atia and an underlying rhythm of intra-vascular recordings. Transitions within the work were diffuse, and the viewer's perception altered according to his particular location at any one time.
